Open House Events

Prospective students and families are invited to attend an open house where they have the opportuntiy to visit campus and explore the magic of being part of the Interlochen community! Dates, details and registration forms will become available in the fall for our 2014-2015 Open House events.

Prospective students often participate in the following during their visit:

  • Shadow a current Academy student through-out the school day
  • Spend time in academic classes
  • Meet current students
  • Visit rehearsals, studios and other artistic classes
  • Meet faculty
  • Learn about campus life and see our residence halls
  • Enjoy a meal at the Stone Cafeteria
  • Learn more about financial aid
  • Take the opportunity to have an artistic meeting, audition, or have your portfolio reviewed
  • Attend an evening performance (see Performance and Events calendar)

Prepare for your Visit

To help prepare for your campus visit:
 
1. Choose your primary Arts Area of Interest.
 
2Request Information: Add youself to our database to receive admission material by mail and email. This will ensure that as you explore the possiblity of Interlochen, you'll be kept up-to-date with information relating to the application process and your arts area of interest.
 
3. Thoroughly Review Website: Watch recent video, read current campus news, dive into our academic course listing, or enjoy reading about Interlochen's history.
 
4. Contact Office of Admission and Financial Aid to meet your admission counselor, request a particular date to visit*, or ask questions about the application process.

*Individual experiences are scheduled by our recruitment coordinator.

Travel and Lodging

Interlochen Arts Academy is located on the campus of Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern lower Michigan, about four hours northwest of Detroit. View map.

Below you’ll find information to help you plan your trip to Interlochen. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

AIR TRANSPORTATION

Delta, American and United Airlines service the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan (TVC) which is only 30 minutes away from the Interlochen campus.

Some travelers might also want to compare other flight options. Sometimes it is more cost-effective to fly into other Michigan airports and drive to Interlochen. Below are the approximate drive times from the four closest major airports to Interlochen:

Grand Rapids (GRR) - 2.5 hours
Detroit Metro (DTW) - 4.5 hours
Chicago Midway (MDW) - 5 hours (depending on traffic and time of day)
Chicago O’Hare (ORD) - 6 hours (depending on traffic and time of day)

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

A variety of lodging accommodations are available for Prospective Students:

Interlochen Housing:
Interlochen Center for the Arts offers a variety of on-campus overnight accommodations. You may choose the Stone Center Hotel, which is centrally located on campus and is newly renovated. Interlochen also offers cabin-style lodges. These range from rustic to luxurious, and from one-bedroom to three-bedroom units, nestled in the comfortable ambiance of the north woods. For guests staying on Interlochen's campus, a shuttle is available from Cherry Capitol Airport in Traverse City.
