Music Courses: Percussion

PERCUSSION

Percussion students are required to have basic skills on snare drum, mallet percussion, timpani, and accessory percussion.  Drum set is also encouraged. Percussion majors receive one full period lesson each week and are required to play in Band/Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble.  See descriptions in Ensemble section.

The following serves as an outline of materials and playing techniques studied in private lessons and studio classes and is individualized to the needs and goals of each student.

Percussion Private Lesson

Target students: Grades 9-PG percussion majors
Pre-requisite, if needed:
Number of times course can be taken: multiple by instructor recommendation
Seating priority: Percussion majors
Credit per semester: .50 per semester (year long course)
Meeting time: 60 minute lesson plus studio class weekly

Description
The following serves as an outline of materials and playing techniques studied in private lessons and studio classes and is individualized to the needs and goals of each student.

Snare Drum:
Rudimental and orchestral styles and techniques.  Methods include: Cirone Portraits in Rhythm; Whaley Musical Studies for the Intermediate Snare Drummer; Delecluse Twelve Etudes; Goldenburg Modern School for Snare Drum; Whaley Rhythmic Patterrs of Contemporary Music; Pratt 14 Modern Contest Solos; Stone Stick Control; Reed Syncopation.

Mallet:
Two and four mallet literature; Whaley Fundamental Studies for Mallets; Bach 6 Sonatas and Partitas; Green Instruction Course for Xylophone; McMillan Masterpieces for Marimba; Stevens Method of Movement.

Timpani:
Orchestral repertoire;Tuning;
Hochrainer Etudes for Timpani Book 1 and 2; Goodman Modern Method for Timpani; Firth The Solo Timpanist; Goldenburg Classic Overtures for Timpani; Hinger Vol. 1 Beethoven Symphonies.

Accessories:
Including proper playing techniques for cymbals, triangle, tambourine, bass drum, and tam tam.

Drum Set:
John Riley books; transcriptions; Hand-outs as developed by the teacher; all styles.

Objectives:
•    Percussion students are encouraged to study  snare drum, marimba, timpani, and multiple percussion.  
•    Drum set is also offered and may be the primary focus.
•    Percussion majors receive one full period lesson each week and are required to play in Band/Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble.

Student Performance:
•    Percussionists are required to perform on regularly scheduled studio classes.

Assessment:
•    Student assessment is based on lesson assignment preparation and semester juries.
