Future of Cinema International Film Festival: May 6-9, 2010


Mission and Objective

The Future of Cinema Festival at Interlochen Center for the Arts provides a setting for high school filmmakers to meet professionals and peers, screen work, discuss trends and new developments in cinema, while creating a greater understanding of a quickly evolving art form.

The Future of Cinema Festival is a continuation of the center's 80 year legacy as leader in the arts.

The Future of Cinema Festival is for the high school film maker seeking a global community of other passionate, driven high school students in cinema; we are a dedicated showcase of new filmmakers' talent. The third annual Future of Cinema Fest 2010 will screen the best national and international work of high school students.

Special Guests

2010 festival guests include:

  • Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore, director of Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine, Sicko, and Capitalism: A Love Story.
  • Writer, director and actor Cory McAbee will screen his works and participate in question-and-answer sessions with students. Best known for his film "The American Astronaut" and his serial film "Stingray Sam," McAbee has been an innovator in finding new ways to distribute his work. He was selected by the Sundance Film Festival to create short films specifically for mobile phones.
  • Writer Doug Stanton is the author of the New York Times bestsellers "In Harm’s Way" and "Horse Soldiers," which spent over three months on the New York Times best-seller list, reaching the number-two position. Both titles are currently in development as feature films.
  • Actor, photographer and writer Benjamin Busch has appeared as an actor on several television programs including "Homicide," "The Wire," "Generation Kill" among several others. His first film as a writer-director, "Sympathetic Details," was released in 2008. An accomplished photographer, he has created two photographic exhibits "The Art in War" and "Occupation," which feature photos taken during his two combat tours in Iraq.
  • Ground-breaking cinematographer Daniel Pearl has worked on hundreds of music videos, commercials and several feature films including the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."
  • Representatives of the ARRI Group, an industry leader in lighting and camera equipment, will provide hands-on activities.

Past special guests of the Future of Cinema Series have included Jeff Wozniak, Senior Digital Artist Lucas Films; Gordon Radley, frmr. President of ILM; James Gartner, Director of Glory Road; Ken Burns, documentary filmmaker; Andy Davis, Director of The Fugitive and Holes; Joel McNeely, Composer for Young Indiana Jones Chronicles; Ivan Raimi, Screenwriter - Darkman, Army of Darkness, Spiderman 3; Jeff Daniels, performer.

Rules and Submissions

We will award (1) half scholarship to Interlochen Arts Academy boarding high school and (1) half scholarship to Interlochen Arts Camp to the best of the festival. We will award (1) half scholarship to Interlochen Arts Camp summer 2010 to the best of the festival runner up.

Entrants are welcome and encouraged to attend the festival though attendance is not required.

Winners of each of the four categories will receive an iPod Touch and a $2000 scholarship to Motion Picture Arts Camp.

$500 scholarships to Motion Picture Arts Camp will be awarded to all students showcased in the festival.

Students who wish to be eligible for scholarships are encouraged to complete an application to Camp and/or Academy.  FOCIFF Scholarship recipients also remain eligible for need-based financial aid.
