In fall 2012, the theatre department worked closely with Tony nominee Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen to produce and present their musical, [title of show]. The musical is about four friends - a composer, a writer and two actresses - struggling through the process of creating an original musical for a contest. The end result is a show that tells the story of its own creation and features its authors in the lead roles.
Originally written for a cast of four, Hunter Bell was interested in creating a new version of the show that would be appropriate for larger casts in high school theatre. Bell approached Bill Church, director of the theatre program at Interlochen, to see if he would be interested in collaborating on a version of the show - and the timing couldn't have been better: Church was looking for an ambitious project to take on tour for the Academy's 50th anniversary celebration.
For the Academy students it was an opportunity to work closely with the creators and original cast of a successful Broadway musical. However, it also created the sometimes surreal situation where the students were actually interacting with the characters they were supposed to bring to life on stage.
