Frequently Asked Questions: Audition Tour
Is the audition tour for students interested in Interlochen Arts Camp or Interlochen Arts Academy or both?
Both! Students are welcome to audition for any performance-based major for either Arts Camp (Summer 2019) or Arts Academy (2019-2020 school year).
What do I need to bring or prepare before the audition?
You need to pre-register online within 48 hours of the event in order to be guaranteed a space. Walk-in applicants are welcome based on available space. When you pre-register, please print your confirmation screen in order to ensure you have the audition location and time with you for reference.
In order to participate in the audition process for Camp, you must first pay your application fees and complete all parts of your application, except for the audition. Start the Camp application.
In order to audition for Academy, your fees must be paid and the application process must be started. Start the Academy application.
Is there a fee for the audition?
No—because we ask families to complete a camp or academy application and pay the associated application fee, we do not ask for an additional fee for the audition.
What do I need to bring or prepare for the audition itself?
Music: You need to bring your instrument, your music, and music for your accompanist. We will have a music stand, chairs, and a piano. If you request to have an accompanist provided, unfortunately you will not be able to meet with that person beforehand. Please remember to bring your music for the provided accompanist and label it appropriately, indicating which measures you will be performing. Please note that while we will provide an accompanist, you are also welcome to bring your own, or forgo an accompanist altogether—it is not required to perform with an accompanist.
Theatre: We will have a piano available if you would like to bring or request an accompanist. If you request an accompanist, please remember to bring your music and label it appropriately, indicating which measures you will be performing. We also have a sound system for a CD or mp3. If you have a resume or photo you would like to submit, please be sure to upload it on your online application.
Dance: Female dancers need to wear a black leotard and pink tights. Male dancers need to wear white t-shirts and black tights. If you are en pointe, please bring your pointe shoes. Dancers auditioning live do not need to prepare a solo piece (which is required for a video submission)—the audition will be led much like a class and may include barre, centre, and combinations. If you have a resume or photo you would like to submit, please be sure to upload it on your online application.
Will I have a place to warm up?
Yes, you will; however, in most of our audition locations, it will not be a private space and all applicants warm up in the same room.
How long do I need to be there?
Everyone will check in and attend an information session that lasts approximately 15 minutes. Following the information session, theatre and music applicants will be given their individual audition time slots, which last roughly ten minutes. Dancers will proceed en masse to the group audition. At the conclusion of the dance audition, parents will be invited to sit in for a dance-specific information session.
Can I audition for more than one program?
You may audition for more than one program within the same major. For example, you may audition for both the Musical Theatre Production program and the Repertory Theatre Production program at the same time. However, students may not audition for programs in more than one major because of time constraints. For example, you may not audition both for dance and for theatre programs at the live audition. You may audition for one major and submit a video online for the other major in which you are interested.
Do I need to arrive prior to the start time?
No. We’ve included time for check-in and warm-up within the designated time frame. There is no need to arrive early. It is important to note that many of our auditions are held in facilities that are used by other programs and organizations, and in order to minimize disruption, we ask that our guests are only in the building during designated times.
Online pre-registration is closed. Can I still come to the audition?
Yes. We are happy to receive walk-in applicants on a space-available basis. Please read over these FAQs to make sure you have all necessary information in order to be properly prepared. In order to receive your results, it is important that you complete a camp or academy application as soon as possible following the audition.
When will I find out my results?
It varies. For camp applicants, generally everyone whose application is complete by February 1 will receive a decision in mid- to late February at the very latest. Some programs may release decisions sooner. For academy applicants, decisions will be released by the end of March at the very latest. Only students who have a completed and submitted application will receive their audition results.

Check-in begins promptly at the beginning of the event and runs for ten to fifteen minutes, so please arrive on time. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate those who arrive late. Applicants must be available for the entirety of the event in order to participate, and may depart once their audition is complete. We cannot accommodate any requests for specific audition times due to the number of students attending these events.
Music and Theatre auditions will last 8-12 minutes. This includes the time it takes to enter and exit the room, set up, tune, and perform. Please be sure to have reviewed the audition requirements in advance.If you have prepared more than 8 minutes of audition material, please be ready to be cut off during your audition. We know that many hours of practice go into preparing these short auditions, and want to allow every candidate a fair chance and equal time in the audition room to display their abilities.
If you cannot meet the above requirements, we kindly request that you let us know that you need to cancel your in-person audition by sending an email at least 24 hours in advance to firstname.lastname@example.org. You may still upload your audition materials online.
Accompaniment is not required, however, Interlochen will provide an accompanist free of charge to those students who are unable to bring their own and still wish to perform with accompaniment. This must be requested in advance when registering for the event. If you choose to bring your own accompanist, they must be available for the entirety of the event.
Please note: In order to be reviewed within a decision period (early, regular, rolling), all materials—including audition results—must be completed. If you have registered for an audition tour date outside of the deadline for the decision period in which you wish to be considered, your application will be moved to the following decision period once we have received your audition results.
