Interlochen Arts Academy horn student Shawn Zheng has won the 2017 Marine Band Concerto Competition.
Of the eight musicians selected to compete in the final round, three were Interlochen Arts Academy students. Flutist Jarrett May and clarinetist Anders Peterson also competed in the Feb. 11 competition.
As winner of the Marine Band Concerto Competition, Shawn will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a solo performance with the “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band on April 9. Earlier this year, Shawn was named a finalist in the YoungArts competition and took part in YoungArts week in Miami, Fla.
This is the second consecutive year that an Interlochen Arts Academy student has won the Marine Band competition: in 2016, flutist Mei Stone won the competition’s top prize.
Congratulations to Shawn and the other finalists!
