We believe in the value of an Interlochen education and are committed to making it possible for each and every talented student who is offered admission to be able to attend. Both merit-based and need-based aid are available. In order to be considered for any financial assistance, families must submit a FAST application.

The tuition cost is a comprehensive fee that includes most of the expenses associated with school participation, including residential costs for all boarding students and all meals for both boarding and day students.

Applying for Aid

  • Financial Aid for School Tuition (FAST)

    • Step 1:
      • Start the Online Application for Admission and indicate "yes" to applying for financial aid.

    • Step 2:
      • Start and submit the FAST Application for Financial Aid.
      • Submit required documents by Decision Period deadlines (below):
      • U.S. and Canadian Residents: 
          • Full federal income tax forms for 2018 and 2019*, including all supporting schedules and W-2s 
      • Non-U.S. or Non-Canadian Residents: 
        • Families from outside the United States or Canada must submit an official letter, in English, from the employer of each parent/guardian that verifies employment, current salary, and other compensation.
      • Business owners are also required to submit form K-1 and corresponding forms 1120-S or 1065 as part of the application

    • Deadlines Follow Admission Application Decision Periods:
      • Early Decision: submit the FAST application along with all required documents by November 15, 2019.
        • Note: *2019 taxes are not required
      • Regular Decision: submit the FAST application along with all required documents by February 1, 2020.
        • Note: *2019 taxes must be submitted no later than March 1, 2020 for new and returning families.
      • Rolling Admission: Applications received after January 15 will be reviewed on a rolling basis as space and funding permits.

    • Interlochen provides transportation to and from the Traverse City Cherry Capital Airport for a small fee - $12 per ride.

Policies

  • In a two-parent family, if only one parent works outside of the home, the Financial Aid Committee will add $20,000 to the income of the family and will recalculate the family contribution. 
    • Exceptions would be if the parent at home is caring for a pre-school aged child, a child with a disability, a seriously ill child, parent or grandparent, or other special circumstances.

  • Divorced/Separated families
    • The Financial Aid committee considers the resources of both legal parents, if living, and expects that both parents will contribute. 
    • If either legal parent remarries, the committee considers the obligations of that parent to the new family as well as the resources of the stepparent. 
    • In a divorced or separated family, both households should submit a FAST application.

  • International need-based aid is limited. Families may be asked to submit additional documentation. 
  • The enrollment agreement is continuous. The contract will renew annually through graduation provided the student remains in good standing.

  • Confidentiality Statement: 
    • Awards are a confidential matter between Interlochen Arts Academy and the family. Only a small, select group of Interlochen Arts Academy administrators are aware of a financial aid application/award. 
    • The family’s financial information and records will be treated with the utmost discretion by the school. No paperwork will be filed on school property. All documents relating to the financial aid application will be uploaded to the FAST site. 
    • Families should not discuss their financial aid status or award with any other Interlochen Arts Academy families or any off-campus association. Discussion of financial aid status could jeopardize the award and may result in the revocation of the award.

Payment Options

We offer a one, two and nine or ten month payment plan option.

Option 1: Pay in Full, one payment
Tuition payment made in full prior to the start of the Academic school year with a due date of August 1. 

A statement will be emailed from the Business Office in July, listing tuition, fees and your payment options.

Option 2: Two payments
Tuition payment divided equally between two payments, due in August and January.  The two tuition payments will be made through FACTS. You pay a one-time enrollment fee, per school year, of $40 to participate.   

After enrolling, you simply make payments to FACTS.  Payments can be due on either the 1st or 15th of the month. You may pay FACTS online or by phone with a checking account, statement savings account, or credit card. You may also sign up to have FACTS automatically deduct your payments from your checking or statement savings account.

Tuition Loan Programs
Tuition loan programs assist many families (must reside in the United States) in making tuition payments more affordable by providing the funds upfront and spreading the payments over a longer period of time than traditional tuition payment plans allow. The provider offers credit-based loans and may have different standards of credit-worthiness. Tuition Insurance Frequently Asked Questionns (FAQs):

What is tuition insurance?
If your student withdraws or is dismissed from the Arts Academy for a reason covered by the policy during the academic year, then TuitionNet pays Interlochen the relevant refund percentage of the “unused portion” of the tuition.  This payment will help satisfy tuition obligations under the enrollment agreement, reducing the financial impact on your family. If you had completed all of your contracted tuition payments, then Interlochen would return applicable claim proceeds directly to you.

What is the “unused portion” of tuition?
Families are expected to pay the contracted tuition amount for the time the student is fully enrolled. The “unused portion” of tuition is the contracted tuition amount between when the student withdraws and the end of the Arts Academy school year.

What are the unused tuition refund percentages for the different types of withdrawal?
Voluntary = 75%
Dismissal = 75%
Medical: Psychiatric = 100%
Medical: Non-Psychiatric = 100%

What if I decide that I don't want to attend the Academy over the summer. Do I have to attend school at all in order to use tuition insurance?
Yes, after 14 days of class instruction (either online or in person), a student can voluntarily withdraw and have 75% of their unused tuition paid by TuitionNet. Families will still be responsible for paying the remaining 25% of their unused tuition.

How much does it cost to participate?
In order to participate, the family must pay the fee to TuitionNet. The fee is based on a percentage of contracted tuition. The cost for the 20-21 academic year is 6.35% of the Arts Academy student’s contracted tuition.

Is there a Deadline to apply for Tuition Insurance for the 2020-2021 academic year?
In order to be eligible for TuitionNet coverage, a student account must be enrolled in the program within the first two (2) days of classes.

What is the “coverage year”?
The coverage year refers to the covered portion of the academic year. Coverage for medical withdrawals begins on August 1st. Unless a student is enrolling after the school year has begun, coverage for voluntary withdrawals and dismissals begins on Day 15, counting the first class day as Day 1. Coverage for all ends on the final instructional day of the school year.
Days of orientation, festival, and graduation are not considered class days.
